I was a little relieved as well when midafternoon of our sixth day we left the linear river wilderness of the Broad River in Margie’s minivan for what would be an evening of human respite—food, conversation, laughter, laundry, and showers. We lashed the canoe on the roof racks and stowed our gear in the hatchback. Margie drove us a few miles to Forest Acres, the 1960s subdivision on the east side of Columbia where she lived across the street from her childhood home with her husband, John, and their two daughters, Anna Ruth and Maria.

On the drive we filled Margie in on our adventures and recovered our sense of shore time. We noted how just downstream from where we took out we would have passed the fall line, the last rapids of the Broad River, and the confluence of two great upstate rivers, the Broad and the Saluda.
